The Design Process

Initial Consultation

Firstly I will arrange a visit to discuss your requirements and view the garden. I can help you decide which areas to develop, what to do about existing features or plants in the garden which you wish to retain, and offer some general gardening advice. This normally takes an hour or two and I charge a fee of £30 plus travelling expenses.

Survey

I will then provide an estimate for each portion of design work, based on an hourly rate of £25. If this is acceptable, I will return to do a comprehensive survey of the site, and draw up a scale plan of the garden showing the house, the boundaries and any features you wish to retain.

Draft Layouts

At a second meeting I will present three proposed draft layouts, showing alternative designs for your garden. These basic plans show how the various components of the garden such as lawn, borders, paths, patio etc. would fit together. The discussion usually enables the client to settle on a final design.

Final Design

The final design includes details such as your choice of paving or walling materials, decking layouts, water features etc. The client's copy will be drawn in ink and colour on A1 or A2 paper as appropriate, either hand-drawn or using computer-aided design. I also provide two black and white copies which can be used as working drawings by contractors, in conjunction with a written specification, to build your garden.

Planting Plans

Most of my clients appreciate some help in selecting plants for their garden, perhaps to fit a particular colour scheme, or to provide interest all year round. I can design borders which fit your criteria, using plants which suit the conditions of the site.

Planting plans can either be included in the final design or dealt with separately, depending on the scale and complexity of the design. I will also provide a separate list of Latin names and quantities and an estimate of cost.

Technical Drawings and Written Specifications

Technical drawings of specific features such as retaining walls, steps and water features drawn to scale will show a landscape contractor exactly how the feature should be built.

A written specification for building your garden provides a basis for obtaining estimates from contractors.

Getting the Garden Built

If you need to employ someone to build your garden you will probably want to obtain estimates from a selection of builders or landscapers. I can help by being on hand to interpret the plans, and can visit the site when the work begins to assist with marking out.

Planting and Plant Sourcing

Since many construction companies do not get involved with planting, I usually finish the garden off by supplying and planting the plants. I can supply plants at a competitive rate and give you advice on looking after them.
